To be exact, under normal circumstances, when it reaches this point in a story, the viewers or the characters understand the details of the fantasy elements (like if something happens, what is happening and how it happens), and that these can be manipulated one way or the other to reach a resolution. But there's still no explanation of the the structure of the game system (like why if you form an alliance with the main character, the dead appear as NPCs and why you can be hurt in reality), and without knowing that, the main character is forced to make the uninformed choice to proceed with the quest.
